Since 1847, The Coach and Horses has served the communities of Danehill and Chelwood Gate. First as an Ale house but now as a country pub and restaurant, serving award winning food alongside traditional pub classics. The traditional pub bars remain and are busy, not only, with locals but new faces lucky enough to have discovered the charm and quality of this Sussex pub on the edge of the Ashdown forest.Coach and Horses Danehill Sussex Garden

A magnificent maple tree dominates the sunny "adult only" terrace at the rear of the pub, whilst the peaceful front garden boasts views of the South Downs and has a play area set aside for children.

Although the food obviously plays an important role in the Coach and Horses success, the atmosphere of the bar still thrives, offering the beer drinker weekly changing guest ales as well as some ten or so wines, sparkling wines and champagne by the glass. The carefully selected main wine list is packed with variety and quality.

A light lunch menu is available in the day and a selection of pub classics are prepared for both lunch and dinner.

Wherever possible, the raw ingredients of each dish are locally sourced. Lamb and soft fruits come from Danehill - veal, beef, venison, seasonal vegetables, wild mushrooms, eggs, pheasant, duck and rabbit come from neighbouring villages and the fish is from Seaford Bay.

The combination of fine ingredients and a team of talented chefs has resulted in a great deal of recognition.

Our head chef Dan Hockaday is in charge of the Coach and Horses kitchens with two under chefs Mark Boshoff and Adam Gibbs.
